Mathematics Learning Materials : A Jumpstart

DepEd San Juan City, through the initiative of Dr. Joel T. Torrecampo, former OIC-SDS, and Ms. Helen Acedo, Educational Program Supervisor (EPS) in Math, conceptualized and conducted a Writeshop on Contextualization, Localization, and Indigenization of Learning Materials in Mathematics on August 25, September 1 and 8, 2018 at SDO San Juan City Conference Hall and the Validation Phase of the said materials on January 25 – 27, 2019 at Linden Suites.

A total of 35 Mathematics teachers from the eight public elementary schools and the public junior high school of San Juan City responded to the call to become resource writers for these instructional materials. Each grade level team was composed of three to four teachers headed by a lead writer. Every team completed six Session Guides with a corresponding Teacher’s Guide.

Phase 1 focused on the development of the learning materials. The instructional materials developed were aligned to the Curriculum Guide of the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum. However, during the second phase, these materials underwent continued editing and revisions to ensure its reliability and acceptability as well as its conformity to the guidelines as discussed by Mr. Orlando D. Claor, EPS Learning Resource Management and Development System.

Dr. Alejandro G. Ibanez, the new OIC – SDS, emphasized that these materials to be validated should reflect the culture of San Juan City. Hence, there is a need to conceptualize and localize the materials adapted to the practices and experiences of the San Juañenos. Also, there is a need to be sensitive so that the social content will not discriminate anyone.

These Session Guides and Teacher’s Guides were deemed to help support the teaching – learning process to increase student performance and guarantee success in meeting curriculum standards in every grade level. Activities were tailored to target the required competencies. With these worksheets, students will be provided with opportunities to practice new skills gained in class for remediation or enhancement.

Throughout the six working days, these dedicated teachers were as busy as bees collaborating with their team members. Although the process was tedious and draining, their outputs proved to be promising. This is SDO’s jumpstart to more learning resource materials in the future. This, too, will encourage other teachers to be more creative in designing resources to address gaps in the mastery of mathematical skills.

Mrs. Flordelisa D. Pereyra, the OIC-ASDS, graced the Closing Program and showed support to this project as she congratulated the committed teachers who unceasingly walk the extra mile for the advancement in the delivery of the teaching – learning process.

As always, every endeavor and undertaking of the leaders in DepEd San Juan is geared toward the success of our learners in mind, nurturing positivity so they do not get discouraged while creating possibilities for a brighter future.
