The Department of Education (DepEd) together with the Department of Social Welfare & Development (DSWD) and Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) held the momentous event in the lives of the children considered in today’s society as the forgotten ones. On June 16, 2016, the first batch of Kariton Klasrum completers attended the moving-up ceremony held at PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. This was attended by the Secretaries of the two agencies concerned, DepEd’s Bro. Armin Luistro and DSWD’s Ms. Dinky Soliman.

Other distinguished guests also graced the event like DepEd Undersecretary Hon. Mario Deriquito, Vice President – Elect and Cong. Leni Robredo, DepEd – NCR Personnel headed by Dr. Ponciano Menguito, the 16 Schools Division Superintendents of the NCR, Education Program Supervisors and Specialists assigned in ALS, Division Kariton Klasrum Focal Persons, School Heads, representatives from concerned NGOs, local executives and parents of the learners who all came together to witness the ceremonies afforded to these young dreamers.

The most-awaited part of the program happened when the host asked Dr. Menguito to come up the stage along with the 17 Schools Division Superintendents. This was the time where Dr. Menguito confirmed that all learners present together with the 7 completers from the Schools Division of San Juan has satisfactory completed the Kariton Klasrum Program and are now eligible for the formal school. These are the street children who roam around the metropolis selling things and begging for loose change. Such a scenario is shared by all cities in Metro Manila so the local executives agreed to replicate the Kariton Klasrum Program of CNN Hero and Founder of DTC, Mr. Efren Peñaflorida. It aims to bring back all these identified children-at-risk in school or find alternative ways to educate them. This resulted in the collaborative work of DepEd NCR, DSWD, and the 17 LGUs in order to reach out to these children and their families.

These children who are considered the least, the lost and the last members of the society before are now given a chance to start a new life far from the perils of the street. The event is but just a stepping stone to the fulfilment of the old adage that the young ones are the hope of this nation. It culminated on the singing of the Kariton Klasrum theme song composed by the personel of DepEd NCR.
